Boeing 737-100 Frontier Airlines: Bringing Jet Travel to the Rockies
The Boeing 737-100, the very first version of what would become the world’s best-selling jetliner, played a short but significant role in the history of Frontier Airlines. Though only 30 of this model were ever built, Frontier was among the carriers that embraced it, using the aircraft to modernize its fleet and introduce Rocky Mountain travelers to the speed and comfort of jet travel.
Frontier’s Move Into the Jet Age
Frontier Airlines, formed in 1950 from a merger of three regional carriers, spent much of its early history serving small and mid-sized cities across the western United States. By the 1960s, passengers were demanding jet service, and competitors like United and Continental were introducing Boeing 727s and Douglas DC-9s. To stay competitive, Frontier began acquiring jets of its own.
In 1969, Frontier became one of the very few airlines to operate the Boeing 737-100, supplementing its growing fleet of Boeing 727-200s.
The Boeing 737-100 at Frontier
Frontier operated two Boeing 737-100s during the early jet years:
-
N73700 (line number 1, the very first 737 ever built, originally delivered to Lufthansa and later leased to Frontier).
-
N73701 (a second example that also flew for the airline for a limited time).
Configured to seat just over 100 passengers, the aircraft was powered by Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofan engines. Despite their modest size, the jets were a good fit for Frontier’s operations out of Denver’s Stapleton International Airport, where high altitude and short runways often challenged larger jets.
Passenger Experience on Frontier’s 737-100
For passengers, stepping aboard a Frontier 737-100 was a leap forward compared to the Convair 580 turboprops that had long connected the mountain states. Travelers enjoyed:
-
Quieter cabins compared to propeller aircraft.
-
Two-by-three seating that felt more spacious than the tight rows on DC-9s.
-
Faster flights between Denver and nearby cities like Albuquerque, Billings, and Salt Lake City.
-
Frontier’s signature service, which emphasized friendly crews and a personal, small-airline touch despite the move into the jet age.
While the cabins were relatively simple compared to modern airliners—no inflight entertainment and limited galley space—the novelty of jet speed and smoothness made a lasting impression.
A Short but Important Career
Although reliable, the Boeing 737-100 was quickly overshadowed by the stretched 737-200, which offered more capacity and better economics. By the mid-1970s, Frontier had transitioned to the 737-200 as the backbone of its fleet, retiring the -100s after only a few years of service.
Legacy in Frontier and Aviation History
Frontier’s use of the Boeing 737-100 may have been brief, but it was historically significant. The airline was one of just a handful to operate the rare model, and it even flew the very first 737 ever built. For Frontier, the type symbolized a turning point—the beginning of its transformation from a regional turboprop operator to a true jet carrier.
Today, aviation enthusiasts look back at Frontier’s 737-100s as both a rarity and a milestone. Though only two served the airline, they connected communities across the Rockies and helped introduce a new era of air travel in the American West.
